About

What is Bread&Net?

Bread&Net is the leading regional convening on digital rights in West Asia and North Africa (WANA), organized annually by SMEX in Beirut. It brings together CSOs, researchers, journalists, technologists, policymakers, and community leaders to discuss the issues shaping the present and future of the digital sphere in the region.
Since its launch in 2018, Bread&Net has grown into a space for exchange, learning, and coalition-building across borders. Participants come together to share experiences, develop strategies, and explore collective responses to the region’s evolving digital challenges.
The event covers a wide range of topics, including internet governance, surveillance, privacy, artificial intelligence, tech accountability, digital sovereignty, internet freedom, community-led technologies, and other issues at the intersection of technology and human rights.
More than a conference, Bread&Net is a space for strengthening the digital rights movement in the region, fostering solidarity across communities, and imagining and building more just, inclusive, and people-centered digital futures.

About SMEX and
Bread&Net

SMEX is a leading digital rights organization based in Beirut, dedicated to advancing human rights in the digital age across the WANA region. Each year, SMEX organizes Bread&Net, the region’s leading annual unconference on digital rights. We convene each year to map ongoing and new threats to online freedoms, strategize collective action, and bring the community together. Across three days, attendees will meet to strategize around the possibilities and challenges posed by the expansion of technology in the Arabic-speaking world. This gathering will serve as a crucial space for initiating critical dialogues and forging strong alliances towards a safe, free and open internet in West Asia and North Africa.
